‘THE NATURE OF HUMAN BEINGS AND THE QUESTION OF THEIR ULTIMATE ORIGIN’

Sophia Europa

Sophia Europa (Theology Faculty) Oxford is a Forum of leading thinkers in Oxford, with expertise in their own specialist areas of study, who are interested in multi-disciplinary and critical exchange of the sciences, humanities and theology.

From 2005-2007, Sophia Europa Oxford was match-funded by Ian Ramsey Centre, Oxford, but has since functioned independently, holding major events when possible to stimulate ongoing research into issues such as “What it Means to be Human” and “The Origins of Nature.”

A well-attended international conference was held in Oxford in 2007 to explore the issue of “Human Persons and the God of Nature.” In 2008, with the visit of Professor Chris Mackay, Astrobiologist, NASA, Ames Research Centre, California, a seminar on the topic “What is Life? Nasa’s Mars Project and the Phoenix Probe” sought to consider the possibility of science and transcendence. Visits to European universities for interdisciplinary exchange of Mathematics, Philosophy and Theology have proved beneficial, as also the memorable participation of Sophia Europa Forum members in a conference held in Gorizia Castle, Italy, on “Human Beings: Philosophical, Theological and Scientific Perspectives.”
